A debate is a structured discussion where two teams have different views on the same question. Each team explains why its view is best, using clear reasons and evidence.

It's a contest of ideas, not people. You win by thinking clearly, listening well, and speaking with purpose.

🎤 Speakers — the team members who present ideas.
🧑‍🏫 Moderator — usually the teacher. They keep time and make sure everyone takes turns.
👏 Audience — the rest of the class. They listen carefully and vote at the end.

Use P-B-E to build a point:

P — Point

Say what you think.

"I think recess should be longer."

B — Because

Give your reason.

"Because students focus better after a break."

E — Example

Show proof or a story.

"For example, after playing I'm ready to read."

"I believe that…"

👂 Listen when the other team is speaking.
🙋 Take turns — wait for your turn to talk.
🧠 Challenge the idea, not the person. No put-downs.
🤝 Be a good sport — say "good debate" at the end.

Opinion: What you think or feel.

Fact: Something true that can be checked.

Reason: The "because" that backs up your idea.

Evidence: Proof, like an example or a number.

Argument: Your idea plus your reasons (not a fight).

Rebuttal: When you answer the other team's idea.

For / Against: The two sides of the question.

Conclusion: Your final summary.
